Dedicated to the life and memory of David James Jones, latterly of Leamington Spa

This site is a tribute to David James Jones. David was much loved by his family, near and afar and by his very many friends made over his long, full and well spent life.

David was proud of his roots - he was born in Southsea, Hampshire, in his Aunt Lil's house and brought up in Marlborough, Wiltshire, at the Repeater Station, with frequent visits to many of his family who continued to live in Southsea. He read French & Russian at Cambridge University, worked for Reuters as a Correspondent in Russia, London & Germany and then, after a short period of teaching Russian at Marlborough Grammar School, where he had been a pupil, set sail to Canada in 1961, where he lectured Russian at McMaster University in Ontario for 6 years. David then left teaching to study linguistics at Toronto University, where he obtained an MA. Following this, he moved to Quebec to work for an Indian Affairs Project with a partially successful objective to get native teachers into the schools system, teaching languages. This was followed by a year as a Research Associate at McGill University. After 15 years in Canada David returned to the UK having secured a teaching post in Leamington Spa, where he taught languages. David also wanted to be closer to his widowed mother, who still lived in Marlborough. David felt so fortunate to have found himself in Leamington Spa - he enjoyed everything that Leamington Spa offered, as well as neighbouring Warwick. David absorbed himself in local choral groups, a recorder group, attended concerts, made some musical arrangements with his friend Paul and fully enjoyed local life making many friends whilst maintaining the friends he'd made over the years. As well as teaching at Campion School and later at Warwick School, David went on to work part time for several Examining Boards, to tutor languages to local children, to work as a Proof Reader, where his knowledge of the history of Russia and Eastern Europe, as well as the languages, was made good use of. In his personal time David spent 4 or 5 years (before the Internet) researching his family history, putting together 8 volumes of information and photographs - remarkable! David still seemed to find time for other interests - country walks with his friends, tending his small garden, trips to France, being a member of the local Humanists, classifying galaxies with Galaxy Zoo and generally enjoying socialising with his many friends.
